The National Engineering Laboratory in Geohazard Prevention Technology for Land Transportation is a special platform jointly built by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Transport for “Innovation Ability Training in the Field of Highway and Waterway Transportation”. The lab was approved by National Development and Reform Commission in 2012, and the construction was completed and officially passed the acceptance inspection on December 25, 2017. Supported by SWJTU, the laboratory is jointly constructed by Southwest Jiaotong University, China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (CREEGC), Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, CAS, Sichuan Highway Planning, Survey, Design and Research Institute Ltd., and Chengdu Xinzhu Road & Bridge Machinery Co., Ltd.

In the field of transportation emergency support, researchers of the national engineering laboratory, based on the major forward-looking needs of the country, focus on the earthquake disaster prevention technology, wind-induced disaster prevention technology, mountain disaster prevention technology of the highway and railway transportation in highly seismic areas, mountain disaster-prone areas, coastal typhoon areas and inland strong wind areas. They have carried out the research and development of four aspects of industry key common technology, products and equipment, technical standards and guidelines, application of basic theory, to build the laboratory an important base for personnel training of high-level engineering technology innovation, and contributed to the comprehensive technical progress in civil engineering disaster prevention in land transportation in China.

In view of the key scientific and technological problems that need to be solved in the disaster prevention technology of transportation civil engineering, three research fields and ten technical development directions of the laboratory are specified and shown as follows.

Three R&D platforms have been built in the national engineering laboratory, including the R&D platform for mountain disaster prevention technology, the R&D platform for wind-induced disaster prevention technology and the R&D platform for earthquake disaster prevention technology, with a total test area of 11,300 m2 and more than 60 sets of large-scale special equipment, including the largest earthquake shaking table in China which is also the second largest one in the world, the largest industrial wind tunnel in the world and the rockfall impact test platform ranking first in Asia jointly built by SCE and Sichuan Ost Slope Protection Engineering Co., Ltd.

The size of the top of the earthquake shaking table is 8×10m; the direction of motion is 3-6 degrees of freedom; the maximum mass of the test object is 160 tons; the maximum overturning moment is 6000 kN·m; the frequency band is 0.1~50Hz; the maximum acceleration of the table top with full load is ±1.2g in both the longitudinal axis (X) and the transverse axis (Y), and ±1.0g in the vertical axis (Z); the maximum velocity of sine wave vibration on the table surface is ±1.20m/s in the X and Y directions, and ±0.83m/s in the vertical direction, and the duration is no less than 10 seconds when the velocity peak is reached in single direction; the maximum displacement of the table top is ±0.80M in the horizontal X axis, and ±0.40m in the vertical Y axis.

During the construction of the national engineering laboratory, through the integration of resources, an earthquake resistant research and development team was established with Professor Zhao Xingquan as the chief expert, Professor He Chuan, Professor Gao Bo, Professor Li Qiao, Professor Yin Xuejun and Professor Zhuang Weilin as the leading researchers; a research team of mountain disaster prevention was set up, led by Academician Cui Peng and design master Ma Ting lin as the core, and Professor Li Zhilin, Professor Yao Lingkan, Professor Yi Sirong and Professor Zhao Shichun as lead researchers; a wind resistant innovation team was formed with the core researchers of Academician Qin Shunquan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Li Yongle who won Yangtze River Scholar Program title and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and Professor Liao Haili.

With Academician Xie Lili as the director, the technical committee composed of nine academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering and 16 well-known experts, and the advisory committee composed of five academicians and five well-known experts have provided strong support for the National Engineering Laboratory.

Laboratory Leaders: Director Pu Qianhui, Deputy Director He Chuan, Deputy Director Wen Yumin and Deputy Director Zhao Canhui

In the past five years, the national engineering laboratory has undertaken multiple scientific research and technological research and development tasks, including 182 national and provincial key scientific research projects, of which 2 projects won the second prize of national scientific and technological invention, and 14 projects won the first prize of provincial and ministerial major engineering achievement scientific and technological progress award. In addition, 152 major non-government sponsored projects were approved; 637 high-quality research papers were published, including 203 SCI papers, 434 EI papers and CSCD papers; 103 invention patents and 72 utility model patents were obtained, and 22 monographs were published. At the same time, the laboratory also participated in the in the compilation of 18 national and provincial standards and specifications.

Since the approval of its construction, the national engineering laboratory has been developing in line with the national key strategies, taking initiative in the research of strategic and prospective fields of disaster prevention in land transportation, and working on the breakthrough of a batch of major technical equipment and key industrial technologies. It has provided support for the advancement of the national industrial development and technological progress, and contributed to the building of an innovative country.
