The International Association of Tunnels (ITA) Engineering Awards 2018, which are regarded as the Grammy Awards of the tunnel and underground space engineering industry, came to an end in Chuzhou, China, on Nov, 7th, 2018. A total of 234 tunnel and underground engineering projects from 25 countries and regions in the world were evaluated in the conference, competing for 9 awards together.

The 317 National Road Chola Mountain Tunnel, in which Professor He Chuan and Professor Wang Mingnian from the School of Civil Engineering have participated on behalf of Southwest Jiaotong University, stood out from numerous declaration projects and finally won the 2018 International Tunnel Association Engineering Award with high votes. This project was unanimously praised and highly evaluated by experts in the international tunnel industry for that its key technology has made innovative achievements in the construction of high-altitude highway tunnels, and has therefore guaranteed the successful construction of Chola Mountain Tunnel Project.

Chola Mountain is located in Dege, Ganzi, Sichuan Province with a 6,168-meter-high main peak above sea level. The mountain is covered with snow all year round, and the roads are steep and dangerous. The mountain is known as the highest and the most risky one in Sichuan and Tibet. The Chola Mountain Tunnel attracts the world''s attention. The main cave is 7,079 meters long with a 7,108-meter-long flat guide length, and it is 4,300 meters above sea level, which makes it the world''s highest altitude highway tunnel.

As an important participant, Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) has made great contributions to the construction of the Chola Mountain Tunnel. Among others, the scientific research team led by Professor He Chuan and Professor Wang Mingnian closely focused on the project. They went to the construction site for guidance many times, and completed several subjects related to the construction of the Chola Mountain Tunnel. Those subjects, including the research on key technology of construction and disaster prevention and rescue of high-altitude and special highway tunnel, the research on anti-freezing comprehensive technology of high-altitude cold region rocky special highway tunnel structure, the research on tunnel operation ventilation and disaster prevention and rescue technology of high-altitude single-hole two-way driving special highway, and the research on operation and energy saving as well as remote monitoring technology of high-altitude special highway tunnel, have overcome many technical problems and filled the gaps in related technologies at home and abroad.

Our team members such as Professor Wang Bo, professor Yan Qixiang, Associate Professor Zeng Yanhua, Associate Professor Wang Feng, Associate Professor Yu Li, Lecturers Yan Tao and Yan Jian, as well as some doctoral students and graduate students went to the site despite the plateau hypoxia circumstance, conducted comprehensive technical researches and put forward a number of innovative achievements, providing technical support for the completion of the Chola Mountain Tunnel Project. By overcoming the difficulties in the construction of this project, a solid foundation has been laid for the construction of the Sichuan-Tibet railway.
